Two ways to play with words
SoyTaboo brings together two games for an in-person group sharing one phone. In Taboo, describe a word without using its five forbidden words. In Time Trial, explain five words in thirty seconds and let the dice change the score. Form two teams with at least two people each and pass the phone to the next clue-giver between turns.
The game is free and runs in your browser. You need an internet connection to load cards, and players speak to each other in the same room. There are no remote multiplayer rooms, and playing does not require an account.
Prepare your first round
- Choose a mode. Taboo lets you set the number of rounds and choose 30, 60 or 90 seconds per turn. Time Trial uses 30-second turns and a target score of 15, 25 or 40.
- Choose the words. Random in Taboo mixes topics and excludes adult cards. Try this mixed selection before choosing a specialist category. The optional +18 and Spicy selections are for adults.
- Position the phone. Only the clue-giver and the player checking the clues should see a Taboo card. Teammates guess aloud without looking at the screen.
- Try a practice turn. Agree on how to settle disputed clues and choose a different clue-giver for the next turn.
Try giving a clue
Practice example: the answer is umbrella, and the forbidden words are rain, water, wet, open and storm. A possible clue is “you carry it folded and hold it above your head to protect yourself from bad weather.” Saying “use it on a rainy day” uses a form of a forbidden word: agree before playing whether those forms also count as a penalty.
In Taboo, a correct answer adds one point, a forbidden word subtracts one, and skipping a card does not change the score. In Time Trial, four correct answers with a dice roll of two add two points. A team's total never drops below zero.
