🤐 SoyTaboo

Ideas by occasion

SoyTaboo does not change its rules because the gathering is a birthday or a class. What changes is the time you have, what the group shares and what you should not do with the score. This page suggests a concrete setup for four situations. The roles of clue-giver, guesser and card-checker are explained in how to organize teams. If this is the first time you open the game, read one example from the rules first.

With family, and mixed ages

The usual problem is not the rulebook. It is the card that only part of the table understands. Famous and Entertainment lean toward whoever watches the same shows. Nature, and sometimes Sports if that family follows the same club, leaves more playable cards for younger players and for anyone who stopped following television years ago.

Start with Random only if you already know the group can skip without guilt. With children at the table, Skip is part of the game, not a lack of manners. The clue-giver says “not this one” and moves on. No explanation is required. One Taboo round of sixty seconds, with one or two rounds per team, is long enough for everyone to speak and short enough that younger players stay at the table.

Seat the guessers near the clue-giver. In a long dining room the clue disappears between plates. The phone faces away from the guessing team. If a child wants to look “for one second,” the card is already over: the answer is written there. Checking the forbidden words can be done by an older player who does not want to describe. They take part without standing in the center.

Time Trial, with a target of 15, works as a second game if the first Taboo round went well. The dice introduces a subtraction you should explain with one example before you start: four correct answers and a roll of two leave two points, and the total does not fall below zero. Without that example, the subtraction looks like a bug.

In a classroom

Use it as a short speaking activity, not as a test. The score of one game depends on which cards appeared and who described them. Do not write it in a grade book. Say that out loud at the start, so nobody plays afraid of a mark.

A large class does not fit into two teams around one phone. Make groups of four to eight, each with a device and the same instructions. If there is only one phone, one group plays while the others prepare, on paper, three clues for a word you write on the board, with five forbidden words you invent. That preparation resembles the game and does not require the whole class to stare at a small screen.

Category: Nature or Random. Skip Famous if the class does not share the same references. Time: sixty seconds and a single round per team the first time. Before that, read the example in the rules guide together and agree whether forms of a forbidden word also subtract. In a classroom, that rule prevents arguments that eat the activity.

Someone who does not want to speak can watch the timer and the forbidden words. Forcing a description from someone who refuses leaves the activity in an awkward silence. Rotate only among volunteers, and offer the checking role as full participation, not as a consolation.

You need a connection to load cards. If the classroom network is unstable, try one game before the group comes in. Reloading in the middle of a turn does not pause the clock. If the network fails at the start, do not spend ten minutes insisting. Switch to the paper exercise and leave SoyTaboo for another day. The help page summarizes what the browser stores.

At an office or a work gathering

Present the game as voluntary and outside any review. The score says nothing about how someone does their job. Saying so keeps a person with a senior role from describing every turn while everyone else stays quiet so they do not “lose” in front of someone who evaluates them at work.

A setup that fits a fifteen-minute break: Taboo, Random or Technology if the team shares that vocabulary, one round, sixty seconds. With six people, two teams of three. The clue-giver rotates if you have time for a second game. You do not need a Time Trial target of 40. That game can run long because the dice subtracts and the target is checked only when the round closes.

The room matters. A meeting table that is very long forces people to shout. Pull the chairs in, or stand at one end. Ask the waiting team not to comment on the clue. In an office, a quiet aside is still audible and hands the answer to the guessers.

Do not use real client names, internal project names or workplace nicknames as house words. The cards are the app's cards. Team names can be neutral nicknames. What you type there can remain in a game record, as Privacy explains.

At a birthday

There is more noise, more people coming and going, and less patience for a long rulebook. Open the home screen on the phone you will use, with the battery charged, before guests arrive. Explain the rules with one example, not with the full list of buttons. The example is in the Taboo guide and can be read aloud in under a minute.

Start when at least four people want to play, not when the party is full. Others join the next round if there is room on a team. A team of seven against a team of two is not a fun variant. It is a table where nobody can hear. Split into two even groups or wait. The game night guide orders that start.

Category: Random if the birthday mixes different people, or Entertainment if you know they share shows and music. Two rounds of sixty seconds. After that, if they ask for more, Time Trial to 15 points. If they ask again, change category in a new game instead of stretching the same one until nobody is laughing.

The present or the cake should not compete with a live turn. If you are about to sing or blow out candles, finish the current turn and put the phone down. Resuming a saved game still counts the time of the turn that was left open. It is cleaner to start another one after the toast.

What repeats in all four

One phone, two teams, one rule said before you start, and permission to skip a card. The host does not have to be the best describer. The host keeps everyone able to hear and keeps the score from being used for something else. If you want to change the tone without touching those points, the variants offer a practice round, a game without rivals and a short target.
